Southampton vs Tottenham – Match Preview

Article by Shania Bedi @shaniabedi1

It’s another huge match for both sides who are fighting to achieve their most important targets for the season as we edge closer towards the end of the season. Anything less than three points on Saturday will not be enough for third place Spurs who are hoping to retain their place in the top four this season.

It was just two weeks ago that the Lilywhites were ten points ahead of rivals Arsenal in fifth place, however after failing to secure a win in three matches, the gap has closed to just four points. Looking ahead at their next fixtures, four points might not be enough for Spurs who still have to play Liverpool and Manchester City away from home.

Southampton will be desperate for three points as they sit only two points above Cardiff in eighteenth place. A defeat for The Saints and a win for Cardiff this weekend will see them drop back into the danger zone, meaning they will be determined to claim three points tomorrow afternoon.

The North London side may have their key players back from injury this weekend, but now have to suffer the absence of Mauricio Pochettino on the touchline. The Spurs boss was given a harsh 2- match ban after confronting Mike Dean at full-time after their defeat at Burnley in February.

On a more positive note, Dele Alli is set to return after suffering a hamstring injury away at Fulham in late January. Alli’s absence has evidently had a negative impact on Spurs given their recent results, his return could play a pivotal part in Tottenham’s attempt to secure Champions League football for next season.

Although they haven’t played up to standards in the past few games, Spurs return to the Premier League after their professional win at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday when they advanced into the quarter finals of the Champions League, therefore they should be flying with confidence heading into tomorrow’s game.
